Social isolation affects more than 40% of people aged 60 and above in Japan, one of the highest rates globally according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
Research by the Japanese government's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare found that roughly one third of seniors experience severe loneliness, which can lead to mental health issues, cognitive decline, and even premature death.
