India Asserts Control Over Arunachal Pradesh Border with Official

The Cartographic Cold War: India's Mapped Response to China's Border Games India has formally identified 27 locations in Arunachal Pradesh on its official map, pushing back against China's long running campaign to erase the state's geography and history.

By assigning standard names to these sites, New Delhi is asserting control over the way we see and understand a contested border area. China's attempts to reshape the region's cartography have been ongoing for years.

In 2017, Beijing first floated six names for places in what it calls Zangnan – a term India refuses to recognize. By 2021, that number had grown to 15; last year, another 11 locations were added to the list.
